River Guide School 2026

Launch your adventure on the French Broad River

Are you an active, motivated person looking for a fun and adventurous outdoor job in Western North Carolina this season? Do you love working on the water, meeting new people, and spending your days outside in one of the most vibrant mountain towns in the Southeast? Asheville Adventure Company is now accepting applications for our annual River Guide School on the French Broad River.

Each spring, we train a select group of students to become professional whitewater river guides. Our Guide School combines technical paddling skills, teamwork, and leadership development to prepare you for a rewarding season guiding guests through the scenic French Broad River Gorge and Pisgah National Forest. Successful participants will be hired as first-year guides with Asheville Adventure Company.

This accelerated format is designed for students who prefer an immersive experience, allowing for focused training and rapid skill development over a shorter calendar period.

What You’ll Learn

Guide School includes both on-water and classroom instruction. Students will learn:

Program Details & Requirements

  • A $300 deposit is required to secure your spot in Guide School. This deposit will be refunded if you are hired and complete the season through August 15.
  • Applicants must be strong swimmers, physically active, and comfortable working outdoors in variable weather conditions.
  • Guides must be dependable team players with a positive attitude and strong customer service skills.
  • All students must hold a current CPR and First Aid certification before guiding. Additional certifications, such as Wilderness First Responder (WFR), EMT, or Swiftwater Rescue, are highly encouraged and increase pay once hired.
