If you’ve already run Section 9, you know what French Broad whitewater feels like. This trip adds the Class IV drops and doubles the distance.
If you want a full day outside, not just a half-day activity between brunch and dinner, this is how you spend it. You’re on the river long enough that everything else fades out; it’s just the water and the crew in your boat.
You’ll run the same rapids from the half-day trip: Needle Rock, Scream Machine, and Frank Bell’s Warm-Up. These are the Section 9 classics: big enough to get your attention, technical enough to keep things interesting.
The first Class IV drop, with a technical line and powerful hydraulics that leave no room for sloppy paddling or hesitation. Guides will talk you through the approach before you run it, but once you’re in, you’re committed. This is the rapid people remember.
The second Class IV, and the one that separates rafters from passengers: Ledges requires precise boat positioning and coordinated paddle work from the entire crew. Miss your line and the river will remind you why Class IV matters.
Between the big drops, you’ll have stretches of calmer water where you can catch your breath, reset, and get ready for the next rapid. The French Broad doesn’t pile everything on top of you at once, it gives you time to process what just happened before the next thing comes.
